Hello Nerd

Mood:fascinated

(Me and my new nerd glasses from The Icing.)

It seems that today, many people have lost the sense of truth. There is a difference between what you think something is and what it really is. First, there's what you believe, what people tell you to believe, what you think... and then there is the truth. Of course, there will always be stereotypes and they will never stop forming because as people, we are fascinated by everything and some people tend to believe everything that you tell them to believe. This blog is for everyone - to stress the importance of knowing what is real and what is false. I don't care if you are a prep, emo, gothic, scene, jock, or whatever. But stereotypes are lies and soon lies will be what people think is the truth. Is that too confusing? There are many stereotypes that I can rant on about. But right now, what I am going to write about is the stereotype stereotypes. You got all that? Let's begin.

So what the heck is prep?

What people think: Nowadays, the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a prep is probably Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, or American Eagle. It is usually associated with people who are "snobs" and shallow people who have no regards for other people's feelings. Am I right? People who shop at Hollister and Abercrombie and stores like that? Umm...no. Those are pretty much just poseurs.

The truth: Prep comes from the word prepratory. The people you call "preps" are people who go to prepratory schools (usually found in New York, LA, and upscale cities like that & often followed by New England private colleges.) In a sense, prepratory schools are kind of like private schools, you could say. They cost a lot of money. ACTUALLY, "preps" vacation on Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Delray Beach, and on the coast of Maine. These vacation locales are places their families have been going to for years, and have histories there. Usually, people who are preppy are very WASP-y. And their family has a lot of "old money". They shop at places like Ralph Lauren, Pop, Lilly, Brookes Brothers, Lacoste, and LL Bean. Someone who is a prep wouldn't go anywhere near Hollister. They carry backpacks and wear tennis shoes - not purses. They play tennis and lacrosse, not calling up all the boys every day. It is a common misconception that preppies are snobs. Many people view them as unapproachable, and as a result mislabel them. Preppies are not as rich as people may think they are, but they are often well off. They buy into classics rather than trends, and don't change their lifestyles with fads.

What about cheerleaders?

What you think: All cheerleaders are mean, preppy, stuck-up b****es who steal your boyfriends.

The truth: They are just... cheerleaders. People who cheer on their school or team. Not all cheerleaders are mean and stuck up. Stereotype!

Okay, so what is the difference between jock and athlete?

*To clear things up, there is a major difference between a jock and athletes. Jocks tend to abuse their popularity, while the athletes don't really mind who they talk to or hang out with.

Signs of a jock: Rude, arrogant, stupid, beats up people, dates only cheerleaders and hangs around other jocks Signs of a true athlete: Love their sport, try to stay down-to-earth (a little arrogance is expected), hang out with whoever they want, date whoever they want, might beat people up but that doesn't mean it was uncalled for.

Nerds?

What you think: Nerd are ugly people who wear thick glasses, know everything, dress horribly, and gets straight As in every class. They have no social life or personality. "SO UNCOOL".

The Truth?: Get over it. Nerds are just smart people, okay? Not all nerds wear thick glasses. A nerd can even be a "prep" or maybe even a "cheerleader". Nerds are just smart people who cares about their grades and future. "Nerds" are going to be your future bosses. They're gonna be CEOs and people you work for. They have personalities and they're cool. Not the stereotypical type you think. Hey, I'm a nerd! (: [Btw, who came up with the word nerd? I think it was first found in a Dr. Seuss book?]

Geeks!

*The people you pick on in high school and wind up working for as an adult.

The geeky kid now owns a million dollar software company

EMO

Emo is NOT:

  • cutting your wrists

  • being depressed

  • male vocalists who sing like little girls about their failed relationships

  • tight pants

  • sidebangs

*I just thought I'd clear that up after all of these "definitions" in which I have encountered an unbelievable amount of people who try to pass off their blatantly false pretenses as fact, and are slowly infecting others with their high-horse, holier-than-thou bullshit. Because honestly, with your ridiculous definitions, Beethoven, George Gershwin, and Britney Spears are/was "emo bands."

The truth?:

*In the early 90s there was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label....

BASICALLY: It's a type of music! It has nothing to do with how dark you wear your eyeliner. It is a type of music and the type of clothing/style associated with that type of music.

SCENE?

-Also another type of music. Scenesters tend to wear a lot of bright colours and mostly, listen to a lot of indies, retro, 80's new wave, classic rock, etc. Scene does not mean emo! The music scene is often associated with other areas that scenesters are interested in, which is liekely, art, photography, creative writing, poetry, tattoos & piercings, civil rights, animal rights, etc.

GOTHIC?

The truth: 1) A germanic tribe who invaded the late roman empire along with the vandals, visi goths etc and actually became more civilized afterwards. 2) An building style used in medieval times and later in victorian times. 2) A literature style of which Dracula and ther supernateral horrors were written in.

---

Did you get all that? Well I hope that now, after reading all this, you have become more openminded. We are all alike. We shouldn't be judged on what type of music we listen to or what kind of clothing we wear or who we hang out with. We are all the same, except different. We all want to get through life knowing we have done something worth fight for. (:

Have a pleasant weekend.

Love, Candy
